Supporting & Enriching the Community

Northville Tree Champions is dedicated to supporting our tree canopy through various efforts that foster engagement and promote sustainable practices to create a greener, healthier, and more vibrant community for all residents to enjoy. Some of our recent efforts include:

  • Consulting with the City of Northville on the placement of new and replacement trees, ensuring they thrive and enhance our environment. (Including planned placement at the new Downs Development). We emphasize the importance of biodiversity in tree species selection, recommending a variety of native and adaptable trees that contribute to a resilient ecosystem.

  • Northville Tree Champions is proud to have helped shape the city's new Tree Ordinance, underscoring urban forestry's significance and promoting sustainable tree care. By working with city officials and Planning Commission members, the ordinance emphasizes tree preservation, biodiversity, and community involvement. Together, we are fostering a greener, healthier Northville for future generations.

  • The formation of the Tree Champions organization itself contributed to Northville winning an official Tree City designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.

  • Tree Champions spearheaded the transformation of an historic elm tree trunk that had to be taken down due to disease. The tree, located in the green space behind the Library and City Hall, was carved with icons depicting Northville’s rich history. Read more on the History Tree page.

    • At the dedication event in the fall of 2024, Mayor Brian Turnbull officially declared September 23rd as Northville Tree Champions Day.

  • Tree Champions functions in an advisory role on the Oakwood Cemetery Restoration Task Force, directing efforts to improve the health of the trees making up the canopy of the area. The Task Force is charged with revitalizing this historic Cemetery located on West Cady Street.
